Also known as ‘Lhachen Palkhar’, Leh Palace is situated in the picturesque town of Leh in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a former royal palace of the Leh kingdom and is also one of the tallest buildings of its time with nine storeys. Completed in 17th century, the palace provides spectacular view of the mountain of Stok Kangri and the Ladakh mountain range that garner tourists from all walks of life. Smaller in size, Leh Palace resembles Lhasa Potala Palace that stands in between the mountains and is a perfect example of Tibetan architecture. Built of stones, wood, mud and sand, Leh Palace proffers stunning views and amazing features that truly exhibit the ancient architecture style. The magnificent palace is now being maintained and restored by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Leh Palace was initially constructed to serve as the residence of the royal family but later it was invaded and captured by Zorawar Singh Kahluria. Despite being faced so many problems, the palace has somehow managed to retain its grandeur which still amuses everyone. Back in the days of glory, each complex of the Leh Palace had different purposes but now it has become a tourist spot in Leh Ladakh. The building looks more imposing when seen from a distance at night and lends a stunning view of the city of Leh. Enjoy the panoramic views of the bustling town with Stok Kangri Mountains as your backdrop. The palace houses a museum that boasts of great collection of artefacts that shreds light on the cultural history of the region.
