Standing at a height of 4350 meters, Pangong Lake is a sparkling blue lake situated near Leh Ladakh in the Himalayan region. Stretching 12 Kilometres long and extending from India to Tibet, Pangong Lake is a famous tourist attraction in Leh Ladakh attracting tourists from all walks of life. Because of its high altitude, the temperature ranges from -5 degrees to 10 degrees Celsius due to which the lake freezes completely during the winters. One of the unique features about this Lake is that it doesn’t remain blue throughout the year or even a day, but it changes its colours from azure to light blue to green or may be sometimes grey. Pangong Lake is a famous tourist spot not only among the travelers but also among the celebrities. The word Pangong is derived from a Tibetan word Bangong Co which means long, narrow and enchanted lake that is situated at height of about 4,350 m. Just 5 hours drive from Leh in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, Pangong Lake is definitely worth the visit when traveling to Leh. The route to Pangong Lake passes through stunning Ladakh country side, covering Chang La which is the third highest motorable mountain pass in the world. The road passes through the villages of Shey, Gya and Changla Pass which is one of the scenic routes to Pangong Lake.
Due to salty water, the lake does not boast of aquatic life but acts as an important breeding ground for a large variety of migratory birds such as Brahmani Ducks, Rare Black necked cranes and seagulls. The beauty of Pangong Lake cannot be describe in words but can only be experienced.
